About Ebira Tao Community UK
We are a registered community organisation proudly representing the Ebira people across the United Kingdom — honouring our past while building our future.
Who We Are
A Community Built on Pride & Purpose
We, the members of the Ebira Tao Community residing in the United Kingdom, having recognised the need to unite under a common body that reflects our shared identity, culture, and values, do hereby establish this Association.
Inspired by the principles of unity, peace, and mutual progress, and mindful of our collective responsibility to preserve and promote the rich cultural heritage of the Ebira people, we are determined to foster understanding, cooperation, and development among our members.
We further acknowledge our duty to contribute meaningfully to the social, educational, and economic advancement of our community, as well as to the broader society in which we live.
In pursuit of these aims and in accordance with the laws of the United Kingdom, the Ebira Tao Community Association (UK) stands as a guiding body committed to unity, progress, and cultural preservation for present and future generations.
Our People
The Ebira People of Nigeria
One of Nigeria’s most culturally rich and historically significant peoples — with a legacy spanning over a thousand years
Geography & Homeland
- The Ebira people are the indigenous inhabitants of Ebiraland, primarily located in Kogi State, North-Central Nigeria.
- Their traditional capital is Okene, a city known as the "Land of the Ebira." The region also encompasses Okene, Adavi, Ajaokuta, Okehi, and parts of Edo State.
- The majestic Opara River runs through Ebiraland, playing a central role in the spiritual and agricultural life of the community.
History & Legacy
- The Ebira trace their ancestry to great warriors and hunters who settled the central Nigerian highlands centuries ago, building sophisticated clan-based societies.
- Historically known for their resistance against colonisation and their proud warrior tradition, the Ebira were also renowned traders and iron-smelters across the Niger-Benue confluence region.
- The Ohinoyi of Ebiraland is the paramount traditional ruler — a position of immense spiritual and political authority respected across Nigeria.
Culture & Festivals
- The Ekuechi masquerade festival is the crown jewel of Ebira culture — a sacred event held annually that connects the living with ancestral spirits through music, dance, and ritual.
- The Ebira are master weavers. Their traditional hand-woven cloth (itepe) features bold geometric patterns and is worn during major ceremonies and celebrations.
- The Ebira language (Igbira) belongs to the Nupoid branch of the Niger-Congo family and is spoken by over 2 million people. The community's oral tradition is extraordinarily rich.
